Creating the ultimate services shop experience

Freelancer.com is a online market place with over 71+ million users from all around the wold. Up until recently freelancers are only able to earn money by being hired on a project. With the launch of Services, freelancers are able to create services that clients can purchase. The only problem is there is no way for freelancer to showcase their services.

Freelancer.com is a the world's largest freelance marketplace with over 72 million users.

My role

My goal is to create the ultimate services shop experience, which will accomplish our business goals and bring Freelancer ahead of its competitor. I worked closely with the product manager to understand how Freelancer's business work and the requirements of the design as well as with engineers to bring the design to life.

Understanding the values we bring to our customers as a platform.

Objective no.1: Increase retention

To better understand how to increase retention, I must first understand why there is a retention problem.

Services & Subscription - a way to solve retention

Early 2023 we launched the long awaited services, and around mid 2023 we launched subscriptions.

What are services?

Before services, freelancers earn money completing work with clients. Clients can either post a project for multiple freelancers to bid on or hire freelancers directly. These model has their merits but also some problems.

  • Clients not knowing what they need or want

  • Projects not having clear deliverables

  • Freelancers not being able to showcase or advertise what they can do

Services aim to solve these problems. Services are a way to offer predefined projects that can be purchased by clients. Freelancers can create a catalog of these Services, making it simpler than ever for clients to find and purchase your Services.

I worked closely with my product manager to design the services product, ensuring freelancer able to showcase their abilities and project deliverables, and clients are able to view and purchase them easily.

What are subscriptions?

To put it simply, subscriptions are recurring services that can be paid weekly, monthly, or yearly. Subscription as a product is a great solution to our retention problem.

Back to shopfronts

As of late 2024, freelancers are really happy with the new services and subscriptions product, however the problem this time is that no way for clients to browse these services. Currently the only way for freelancers to share their services is to share a direct link.

Defining the problem

01

Freelancer earnings

Our business goal for 2024 is to increase freelancer earnings. Services, subscriptions and shopfront will increase freelancer earnings greatly.

02

A place to showcase and sell services and products

The main problem is that there is no way for clients to discover and purchase services aside from freelancers sharing a link to them.

03

Staying ahead of our competitors

Our competitor Fiverr and Upwork both already provide a way to showcase and sell services/work by their users for a while. Our shopfront is an opportunity to not catch up to them but to surprass them
